Following on from our first sustainability blog for New Zealand businesses, here’s some of the incredible Aussie companies also doing great work in this area.
Sustainability is a buzz word heavily talked about, promoted, blogged & ofttimes dismissed in the past 6 years. We all know we need to make changes and the majority of us are already on the path or at least starting to think about what they could do to be part of the effort.
There are many challenges in running a hospo business and when it comes to initiating sustainable practices, what starts as a great concept/idea or excitement can be hard to continue - especially with changes in team, seasons and turnover.
So we have researched and found a few companies we believe have proved that their sustainable product or service models work; a list of companies we think are on the right path to making it easy enough for us all to make small changes that are simple to maintain.

It’s been a few years now that the war on straws has been battling on. Paper straws entered the market and with them a price tag and sogginess that left us all feeling a little underwhelmed.
In early 2018 we meet the incredibly passionate and bubbly Teresa - the founder of Stroh, the natural wheat stem drinking straw.
What started as a dream to do something good for this planet (while working at Coca Cola Amatil) has resulted in a bustling business supplying straws across New Zealand and Australia. If you’re thinking about changing straws from the plastic ones then give these ones a whirl.
Thankyou has to be one of the more famous feel good stories to come out of Australasia.
What started as a bottled water business to help raise funds to provide clean water to those in poverty has grown into a booming hand wash solution, in over 5500 outlets across Australasia, that commits 100% of their profit to end global poverty.
Thankyou now offers a wholesale option for us Hopso businesses so it might be a perfect time to give your hand washing solution a rethink.
Fresh thinking guru’s at Farmwall

You may have seen a few of these incredible looking fish tanks appearing across some of Melbourne’s loved cafes: Top Paddock, Higher Ground, Avenue on George & Worksmith (Not a cafe but still cool).
These wonderful looking contraptions are the brainchild of Farmwall. Imaging picking fresh herbs for salads, omelettes, sandwiches from inside you cafe. Then lift the bar further and display an incredible looking fish tank (that’s feeding the plants & the plants are feeding the fish)… Amazing!

Resource Sharing
Tim Williams at Bureaux Collective has given coffee roasting business models a good rethink. After hearing him present about sharing resources at GROW Assembly 2017, I was quickly in touch as I couldn’t have agreed more.
Tim has set up a space where those who want to roast their own beans can share resources: booking roasting times, sharing storage and most importantly making the most of the roaster.
With coffee sales growing at exponential rate across the world and many boutique roasters launching, Bureaux Collective has nailed the concept of being sustainable through sharing.
